RIP Ambrosia Ijebu! But Who Was This Troll?
S/He had a 21-month run on Twitter — with one of its iterations. It came from out of nowhere and immediately took twitter by storm. Twitter has now taken it out by storm, all by its own doing. Could be the same elsewhere but in Nigeria, hardly can a secret stay hidden forever. The people may go on pretending they don’t know who did what, but if you listen to whispers, you’d soon realise that Nigeria does not do secrets, it does open secrets at best. That’s the story of ‘@Ambrosia_Ijebu’.
The twitter account @Ambrosia_Ijebu was mostly popular for its bio that said something along the lines of, ‘This is Nigeria, anything you see, you take it like that’. The account has met its own version of that statement. After gaining prominence since 2021, for mostly its seeming access to privileged financial info and takes on Nigerian issues. It helped that it was viciously anti-government, especially the Federal and Lagos State governments. It gained even more twitter following when it started backing Nigeria’s most popular 2023 presidential candidate – on social media – Peter Obi. That also meant that like many of the so called ‘obidients,’ it added a massive dose of trolling to its twitter repertoire. Through it all, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, was one of its major targets.
Our ‘Ambrosia Ijebu’ stayed hidden for a while but even anonymous accounts want what they want. If you want to catch a rat, what do you do? Set a trap with something it loves to eat. In this case though, no trap needed to be set. @Ambrosia_Ijebu walked into its own hole in search of something of that nature. It appeared to be just another day in the world of ‘Ambrosia Ijebu’ looking to use its anonymous account to woo a lady via Direct Message. The conversation did not end well. We now know that because the conversation ended up spilling to the timeline and inadvertently ended up exposing more than may be even the twitter user envisaged.
Who Was Behind ‘Ambrosia Ijebu’?
These twitter images appear to have answers, starting with the tweet that started the storm.
As usual with Twitter, there is always more. ‘Ambrosia Ijebu’ certainly had a type as this tweet shows.
Did a Twitter user once refer to ‘@Ambrosia_Ijebu’ as Fola?
If you asked me if Fola Fagbule was behind the @Ambrosia_Ijebu account, frankly speaking, it would feel like Mehdi Hassan asking me a question I do not have an answer to. Or, that I cannot answer.
None of these images and the other ones on Twitter make for enough data to conclude that he was behind the account. I say this because I am biased. I am biased because I just do not expect that someone so highly placed, with such professional record and reputation would stoop so low to be a troll, especially an anonymous one. Especially as, while I am not close to Fola, @Ambrosia_Ijebu trolled people that were quite close to Fola. So, pardon me if I am finding it difficult believing this person was our collective troll all along. That said, I’d urge everyone to follow the data. But do not be quick to make conclusions. This is not an investigative post, it was posted to ask questions. Like, who was behind ‘@Ambrosia_Ijebu all along? And what handles do you suggest they should return as? I would say @Ambrosia_Saudi.
