#AFCON2023: Redemption versus Resurrection
The #AFCON2023 final is the final of a redeemed team versus a resurrected one. Redemption and Resurrection.
The Super Eagles were down and out before the tournament. We were at our lowest point for many years. We were in that place where any team in the world could aspire to a draw or even beat us. We could not beat Lesotho, Zimbabwe and Guinea in our last three matches before the tournament. The first two were competitive matches we were expected to win well. We struggled. Jose Peseiro was meant to get sacked! Then, we stepped into Abidjan.
The Elephants of Côte d’Ivoire started the tournament with a victory they were expected to get. Then, everything that could go wrong went wrong after that. Two losses, one annihilation. Equatorial Guinea destroyed and humiliated them 4–0. So, 3 points and a messy goal difference —3. Surely, they were going to get knocked out. Day 1, dead and buried. Day 2, dead and buried. Day 3, resurrection. They had been rescued by Morocco.
Then, they had to face Senegal, tournament favourites, surely, that was the end then. Somehow, they got through on penalties. Then came Mali, red card in the first half, then a goal behind in the second half. One man down, one goal down, surely, they were going out. They surprisingly extended them to extra time and still won, 2–1. By the time DR Congo came, they knew their story was written.
Here we are, Redemption versus Resurrection. Super Eagles versus Elephants II. No one saw this coming.
Here is wishing the Super Eagles a resounding victory. The Côte d’Ivoire already made their people proud. They have done enough at this point. It’s time for the Super Eagles, #LetsDoItAgain !
